Salem Haunted Happenings 2026: October in Salem, the Grand Parade and how to arrive
Salem Haunted Happenings fills the whole of October 2026, opening with the Grand Parade on Thursday, October 1 and closing with Halloween night's drone show over the North River. It is the largest Halloween celebration in the world, and October weekends push Salem's parking, trains and hotels to their limits.

Come on a weekday if you want the museums and the Witch House without queues; come on a weekend or Halloween for the street atmosphere and accept that the commuter rail from Boston is the only sensible arrival. Sleep in Boston or on the North Shore and treat Salem as a day, unless you booked a Salem room months ago.

The event
Haunted Happenings is Salem's month-long October: haunted walks, the witch-trials museums and memorial, costume balls, street vendors on the Essex Street pedestrian mall, and a closing Halloween night that ends with a drone show over the North River. Destination Salem runs the festival calendar and a visitor app with parking and traffic updates.
The Salem Chamber of Commerce opens the month with the Grand Parade on Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 6:30 p.m., running from Prime Group Shetland Park through downtown to Salem Common under the theme Old-School Halloween.
Weekday Salem versus weekend Salem
On October weekdays the museums, the Witch House, the House of the Seven Gables and the Charter Street cemetery run with short waits and the streets keep their character. On weekends and in the final week the crowds are the event: expect queues for every ticketed site, packed sidewalks, and traffic that stops on the approaches.
Book timed tickets for the witch-trials sites ahead of any weekend visit, and plan one indoor anchor per half day rather than a checklist.
Arriving without the traffic
The MBTA Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line stops at Salem Station, a short walk from downtown, and the festival itself recommends it over driving. From Boston's North Station it is a direct ride, which is why a Boston base works for Salem in October.
If you must drive, arrive early in the morning and use the garages the city lists; the Destination Salem app carries real-time parking and traffic notices through the month.
Good to know
- Halloween night itself and the last two weekends of October are the densest days of the year in Salem; a first-time visit is easier in the first half of the month.
- Costumes are welcome on the street; the ticketed museums keep their own rules.
