Lowell Folk Festival 2027: free music weekend in the mill city, July 23 to 25
The Lowell Folk Festival returns to downtown Lowell from July 23 to 25, 2027: three days of free traditional music on outdoor stages, ethnic food booths and craft demonstrations across the national park's mill city. It is one of the largest free folk festivals in the country and the reason to put Lowell on a summer weekend.

Plan it as a day or an overnight from Boston on the commuter rail: the stages are within walking distance of the station and the canals, and the festival is free. If you want the whole weekend, book a Lowell or Merrimack Valley room early, because the town has few.

The event
The Lowell Folk Festival is a free, three-day celebration of traditional music, dance, food and craft, produced with the Lowell Festival Foundation in the streets and parks of downtown Lowell. The 2027 festival runs from Friday, July 23 to Sunday, July 25.
The stages sit among the mill buildings and canals of Lowell National Historical Park, so the festival doubles as the best introduction to the city that started the American industrial revolution.
Planning the weekend
Lowell is a commuter-rail ride from Boston's North Station, and the festival streets are a walk from the Lowell station, which makes a car unnecessary. Summer weekends in the valley are warm; the canals and the park's indoor exhibits are the shade.
Rooms in Lowell itself are limited, so a full-weekend stay needs an early booking; a Boston base with two day trips is the easier plan for most visitors.
